Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

- It's all about Geography

You would know from previous newsletters that MDS' solutions are made up of a combination of mapping data and geographic applications (geo-apps), delivering services via the internet and mobile devices.

Fellow readers of this newsletter are from industries across the spectrum, from government organisations to commercial businesses.  Why? Because location is common to every industry and up to 85% of all data has an address component, making geography an important consideration when making business decisions.

So what is GIS?

GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends that are not necessarily obvious.  These can take the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts to name a few.

GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.  At MDS we refer to accessing the spatial element in our data as Geo-enabling and delivered via Geo-Apps.

Eric Harrison

It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of Eric Harrison earlier this month.

Eric worked at MDS on two separate occasions over 7 years.  He was a great "salt of the earth" man with a story for every occasion with work and life experiences that left many wondering how he ever achieved so much.   Always able to speak his mind, and push his agenda, or step in and help others when ever or where ever.

A wonderful and generous person. He will be missed.

Did you know?

Standards, Metadata and Interoperability.....

What's the big deal?

Metadata is used to describe how data has been created.  For the GIS Professionals out there, you will already know this, however what role does it play within solutions?  MDS is currently working to ensure that metadata is available for use across all MDS data products.

To find out what the big deal is, we asked one of our customers to give us an explanation.

"Spatial professionals have been talking about and trying to achieve interoperability for many years, and we finally seem to be reaching the goal.  Interoperability means that you can use my spatial data or the services made from it, and I can use yours, because we both adhere to some common standards.

Not surprisingly, there have been a lot of spatial standards over the years, as our requirements grew and technologies improved. Some, like shape files and KML, are "de facto" standards because users understand them, they are documented, relatively simple to implement, and appear to do the job. At the other end of the spectrum are the standards determined by international committees like ISO and OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium), which are often relatively complex and take a while to be understood and implemented."
